Heart Beats: A Playlist

Good music helps get us through the hard times and appreciate the good times. This is a list of recommended songs for anyone else out there who knows what it’s like to live with a broken (or ticking) heart.

Feel free to share your thoughts and suggest more songs in the comments!

I had this one on repeat for months after watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

“I’ve been waiting all my life / To feel your heart as it’s keeping time / We’ll do whatever just to stay alive”

Mindy Gledhill (featuring Fiona Brawley) – “All About Your Heart

“You are brighter than the stars / Believe me when I say / It’s not about your scars / It’s all about your heart”

Lifehouse – “Broken

“I’m falling apart, I’m barely breathing / with a broken heart that’s still beating / in pain there is healing”

Florence and the Machine – “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)” and “Cosmic Love

“I wish that I could just be brave / I must become a lion-hearted girl / ready for a fight / before I make the final sacrifice”

“I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map / and knew that somehow I could find my way back / Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too / so I stayed in the darkness with you”

The Fray – “Heartbeat

A personal favorite of mine. <3

“I know the memories rushing into mind / I wanna kiss your scars tonight”

Nneka – “Heartbeat (Chase & Status Remix)

(Suggested by PilotHeart.)

“Can you feel my heart is beating?”

Modest Mouse – “Float On

“Don’t worry, even if things end up a bit too heavy / we’ll all float on all right”

Matchbox Twenty – “3 AM

“Well heaven she says baby / Well I can’t help but be scared of it all sometimes / Says the rain’s gonna wash away, I believe it”

The Killers – “Flesh and Bone

“They say I’ll adjust / God knows I must / but I’m not sure how / This natural selection picked me out to be / a dark horse running in a fantasy”

Mötley Crüe – “Kickstart My Heart

(Suggested by PilotHeart.)

“Oh yeah / kickstart my heart / give it a start / oh yeah, baby, oh yeah / kickstart my heart / hope it never stops”

Two Steps from Hell – “Heart of Courage (Invincible)

For an extra epic bravery boost when you need it most. (Instrumental.)

Charli XCX – “Boom Clap

A kinda catchy, upbeat song from the soundtrack to a real tearjerker of a movie, The Fault in Our Stars.

“Boom! Clap! / The sound of my heart / The beat goes on and on and on”

Hugh Grant – “Pop! Goes My Heart

A silly song from a wonderfully silly movie, Music and Lyrics, for those times when you need a laugh.

“A twist of fate makes life worthwhile / You are gold and silver / I said I wasn’t gonna lose my head / but then pop! goes my heart”

Ellie Goulding – “Beating Heart

“Wanna hear your beating heart tonight / before the bleeding sun comes alive / I want to make the best of what is left, hold tight / and hear my beating heart one last time / before daylight”

David Guetta (featuring Sia) – “Titanium

“Stone heart loves bulletproof glass / You shoot me down, but I won’t fall / I am titanium”

Wolfsheim – “Once in a Lifetime

I listened to this one a lot just before surgery.

“Calm down my heart / don’t beat so fast / don’t be afraid / just once in a lifetime”

Coldplay – “The Scientist

“Questions of science / science and progress / do not speak as loud as my heart . . . Nobody said it was easy / nobody said it would be so hard”

Basia Bulat – “Heart of my Own

“With a heart of my own / burn it down low / the light in your verse / and the shadow between / the way that I was when I used to roam”

Foo Fighters – “Times Like These

“It’s times like these you learn to live again / It’s times like these you give and give again / It’s times like these you learn to love again / It’s times like these time and time again”

Potter Puppet Pals – “The Mysterious Ticking Noise

Another silly song, even sillier than the Hugh Grant one. It’s not actually about a ticking heart, but it comes to mind every time someone wonders just what on earth is making that mysterious ticking noise they keep hearing.

“What is that mysterious ticking noise? Not over here, not over there… It’s kind of… catchy.”

Bon Jovi – “It’s My Life

“It’s my life, and it’s now or never / I ain’t gonna live forever / I just wanna live while I’m alive / My heart is like an open highway / like Frankie said, I did it my way / I just wanna live while I’m alive / ’cause it’s my life”

Rachel Platten – “Fight Song

“This is my fight song / take back my life song / prove I’m all right song / My power’s turned on / starting right now I’ll be strong”

Stephanie Bentley – “I Will Survive

I will survive, I will endure / when the going is rough, you can’t be sure / I’ll tough it out, I won’t give in / when I’m knocked down, I’ll get up again / as long as my dream’s alive, I will survive”

Survivor – “Eye of the Tiger

Oh, come on. You knew it had to be here somewhere.

“Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past / you must fight just to keep them alive”

Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)

Yes, I know it’s technically a break-up song. No, I don’t care.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger / stand a little taller / doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone”

U2 – “Beautiful Day

“The heart is a bloom / shoots up through the stony ground . . . It’s a beautiful day / don’t let it get away”

Bonus: Clockwork Quartet – “The Watchmaker’s Apprentice” and “The Doctor’s Wife

Caution: these songs are grim and the stories they tell are a wee bit on the violent side, and could be upsetting if you’re not in the right frame of mind for them. That being said, they are awesome songs and if you’re into steampunk, you’ll probably enjoy them thoroughly. :)

“I tell you that clockwork’s a powerful thing / there’s a terrible strength in those tightly wound springs / and a gentleman’s pocket-watch stays by his heart / and that’s where the damage can start”

“Neatly laid on the bed sheet / I can still hear her fading heartbeat / I’ll keep her stable and continue my research / she’ll smile again”

    • How could I ever forget Motley Crue?! I’ll have to add that one. I’ll be looking up Nneka when I get home later; I’m not familiar with that song.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! :)
